You are going to have to explain exactly how the NAS is connected to your lan, and how your iMac is connected to your lan.
Are they both connected to a router or a switch?
When you say you remove a cable, what cable do you mean? Is this the cable from the iMac to a router/ switch ?
This sounds very much like a network setup problem and the forum members will need morê details about this.
