No faster than 13.5 megabytes/second?
Hi everyone. I'm getting relatively slow speeds from my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo.
I have a current-generation 13" MacBook Pro (the better model with the i7 CPU), which uses a 750 gig Toshiba MK7559GSXF and a gigabit NIC. This is connected to a D-Link 1008D Gigabit 'green' switch. My Netgear ReadyNAS Duo is filled with 2 x Seagate 7200.12 1 terabyte 3.5 inch drives. I'm using cat 5e and cat 6 cables. I have disabled all power-saving features and all performance options using FrontView. At all times, both the Mac and the NAS claim to be in Gigabit mode.
Transferring a 1.96 gigabyte file from the Mac to the NAS, I'm getting the following data transfer rates:
NAS in RAID 1 mode, over Apple File Protocol: 10.1 megabytes/second.
NAS in RAID 1 mode, over CIFS (SMB): 9.5 megabytes/second.
NAS in RAID 1 mode, over CIFS (SMB) with the Mac and NAS connected directly, not through the switch: 13.5 megabytes/second.
NAS in RAID 0 mode, over CIFS (SMB) through the switch again: 11.8 megabytes/second.
One of the drives came with firmware CC38 and I updated it to CC49. That update was successfully applied, but has not altered the speeds I'm getting.
Are these speeds acceptable? What am I missing here?
Richard

What version of Mac OS X on the MBP?
Do the speeds differ depending on whether you are writing data to the NAS and reading from the NAS? - RichardcavellAspirantThe NAS is running RAIDiator 4.1.8, which appears to be the latest.
My Mac is running OS X 10.7.3, which is the latest.
Right now I transferred 1.96 gigs to and from the NAS in RAID 0 over CIFS, through the switch:
From the NAS to the Macintosh : 10.3 megabytes/sec
From the Macintosh to the NAS : 11.5 megabytes/sec
I also performed the same experiment using my Windows PC.
From the PC to the NAS: 12.5 megabytes/sec
From the NAS to the PC: 25.5 megabytes/sec
Richard - RichardcavellAspirantAfter discussing the matter on ##hardware on irc.freenode.net, we decided that I shall return the unit. These results are so far below benchmarks that it's ridiculous. Plus I'm getting all sorts of curious errors when resyncing etc that make me think there's something seriously wrong with this unit.
