no filesystem
I am using the nvx with 4 x 1tb drives.
i back up this device (scheduled every evening) onto a 3tb external hard drive (formatted ntfs) via the front usb port.
Every month i rotate this 3tb drive with a second 3tb drive, so i always have 2 back ups of the nas drive, albeit slightly lagged in time.
I have been doing this for years now without a hitch. Actually this has saved me only last year after a 2 drive failure!!
However recently when i swapped one of the external drives for the second one - like i always do - i see in frontview that the drive is not recognized as having a filesytem.
If i attach this external to a windows 7 machine i see all of the files there from the last time i was using this as a back up( 2 months ago)
Any ideas as to why this is happening?
appreciate any help
thanks
Andy

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you remember to safely unmount the USB disk?
What filesystem is on the USB disk?
Have you checked the health of the USB disk? - andyb1Aspirantunmounted via frontview. used the disconnect option.
format = NTFS
health seems ok. i can hook it up and read it read it no problem on my windows 7 machine - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredChecking the health would mean e.g. running the drive vendor's diagnostic tool. Being able to mount it and read it on the Win7 machine doesn't indicate that much.
- andyb1Aspirantok. ran a quick diagnostic using WD software. passed.
currently running the extended test. will comment tomorrow as it is going to take a while.
Assuming it passes ... what would you recommend next?
thnaks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCould possibly be a rare software bug of some sort. Perhaps format the disk (note this wipes all data on the disk) and see if you run into the issue again.
- andyb1Aspirantok. that was going to be my last resort since i have nearly 2tb backed up on this drive and it takes a few days for that to get copied onto the external. But i think you might be right in just doing that, especially since i already have 1 back up copy. Then i dont have to waste anymore time, yours or mine, trying to figure this out. Of course unless this happens again after i reformat!
thanks for your help
