I have found that these gradually occur when "auto-update" is turned on. Turning off auto-update and rescanning gets rid of the "(null)" folders and they do not occur again. You may need to reset your client device to remove any caching that has occured.
(I confirmed that they were missing on the ReadyNAS by looking at the folder list returned from both my WD TV Live and VLC running on OSX 10.6.6. I find it unlikely that both of the clients would return the same bad list.
