RAID-1 is a 2-drive array. RAID-1 doesn't make sense with any other number of disks. There are different kinds of RAID used when you have more disks. On a Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. NV+) you could use RAID-5 (still protects against a single disk failure) or RAID-5. I believe you can add an additional drive as a hot-spare which would automatically be used to rebuild the array after a disk fails.
On Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. NV+) only X-RAID arrays can have additional drives added into an existing array. See X-RAID in Action. You cannot add a disk as a hot-spare to an X-RAID array, only to Flex-RAID (e.g. RAID-1, RAID-5).
