NV+ slows after 15-20 minutes [SOLVED]

I deliberately used the same cable between the pc and the nas as between the switch and the NAS to ensure that would not be a variable. I also used a netgear supplied cable to ensure some sort of quality control. In my testing before writing the post I used various nic cables. changing them didn't seem to make any difference.

11 hours later and the 99% of memory is still allocated. When I used NASTester you could clearly see the memory usage jump up as tasks were carried out, and then drop away to the normal 12-15% when they were complete. that didn't happen with the Acronis backup where the memory remained allocated. As I properly cancelled the job through Acronis (which helpfully said "job successful" after aborting !) it looks like the nv+ hasn't reacted / received the message or it has simply stalled in that job. Frontview etc are slow to respond and fan speed was up at 1923 rpm, even though nothing active has been going on overnight. Hard disk temperatures were 40 C for the middle two and 35 C for the outer ones, so nice & cool.

i'm happy to continue to do some more testing, what's the best course of action from here ?

ps, can you explain what the false carrier / idle errors are..... could it be because i hot swapped the network cable to reset the counters and then hot swapped back ?
