I'd try these steps (in order)
- updating to 4.2.31 (if you have enough functionality to do that)
- disabling Kaspersky
- either updating your browser (your version is over 2 years old) or trying chrome
I'm not seeing your issue with current Chrome or Firefox.
Firefox ESR 52.8.0 (32-bit)
Kaspersky Internet Security 18.0.0.405
Is it advisable to attempt an update with error messages - or is there no better time?! It's just that I've had this version for so long without issue. And I don't want to risk irreparable damage.

It looks as though the browser may be the issue. I'm on the verge of upgrading but my OS is too old to upgrade my browser, however I have Brave on my mobile so accessed the NAS that way and found no error messages, the logs displayed (though greyed out), and Vault is still shown as unticked, and unlike on desktop, doesn't display other fields.
With this additional info, I'd be prepared to wait until I've upgraded, now that it seems to be the browser. Do you think that would be okay or better to still proceed with the firmware upgrade now?
Also, would you say it was fine to upgrade from within a virtual machine?

I don't see why not.

There is one security patch (Samba CVE-2017-7494) in the release notes for 4.2.31, with nothing else. The security patch is significant, but you have been living w/o it for quite a while.
If the browser will let you, I'd upgrade now. But I wouldn't do anything heroic.
