You are suggesting that he remove the existing disks (powered down) and insert scratch disks to see? The alternative would be to factory reset with one or two disks installed, and recover everything from backup later on.

One possibility is that the replacement supply doesn't have quite enough power. I think that might be where mdgm is going. What supply did you purchase?
Are you using the same drives you had back in July 2012? Also, I am wondering if disk spindown is still disabled?
