PLEX Overheads

I have all my media (movies, music and photos etc) stored in the folders
c:/media/movies
c:/media/music
c:/media/photos

Previously I used AirVideo to stream my movies etc over wifi but had problems accessing the files over 3G

I have now installed the Plex server on my ReadyNas and the Plex Clients on my IOS devices.
With Plex installed I can now access the files over 3G which is wonderful.

I just wanted to know if there is an overhead for this.
Does Plex copy all my media files to its own directory or does Plex simply reference my media files?

It seems a rather silly to have my media files duplicated on my Nas.

  • plex does not duplicate your media.

it does have a database and can download other assets (tv/movie/album art etc).

if you are referring to the transcoding, it does it on the fly, and while I don't believe it is stored permanently, I am sure it does have some sort of caching mechanism so that it can stream efficiently.
