Poor performance ReadyNas Duo
Hi All,
Many posts about this subject but I'm stucked.
I saw the bad performance of my duo in the network. 1GB network,CAT6 cables, D-Link router.
Write speed only 5,5 MB/s
Read speed 10 MB/s
I tried the direct connection but no difference in the speed.
What could be the problem? My onboard NIC? It's an NVIDIA nForce or is it the NAS?
Inside the NAS: 2 samsung hd103UJ 931GB in X-Raid
Any help would be appreciated, I already installed the latest driver from NVidia for my chipset.
I user Raidar 4.3.3
Raidiator 4.1.8

- ReadySECUREApprenticeHello,
There is beta version believed to address a performance issue with the ReadyNAS. Please see the link below.

Let us know if it works for you, if you decide to test it. - Triple_tAspirantHello,
Thanks for the tip, I'll try it soon.
a few minutes later :)
Ooooooh yes, that makes a difference!
read is now 25 instead of 10 MB/s :o
Will test write also in a few minutes
Hmmm what a pitty, write speed is still under 7 MB/s.
Read is much improved, what about write?
I used a 4,5GB file to test. - Triple_tAspirantI did another test, went back to version raidiator 4.1.7 to test:
read speed was 23,3 MB/s
write speed again slow 6,1 MB/s
Why is write spead so much lower? Can anyone think of a reason orexplain? Is it a raidiator issue? - Triple_tAspirantDid some more testing, it has to do with jumbo frames.
I unchecked it and then the speed is mucht higher.
Strange thing is that my router supports jumbo frames (9000), it's a d-link DGS-1008D.
Also when I had thje direct connection the speed was low... might be my NIC?
Has anyone noticed this behaviour too? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Well, the one-line answer is that if jumbo frames don't increase performance then you should leave them off.Triple-t wrote: Did some more testing, it has to do with jumbo frames.

The only reason jumbo frames improve performance is that sending fewer packets usually reduces the CPU overhead on the PCs. However, many newer NIC cards offload a lot of the packet processing from the PC to the NIC hardware anyway, so they often don't help much. There are likely some settings in the NIC that you could tweak; though if you are getting good performance w/o jumbo frames I suggest you just leave them off. - ademarAspirant

Just dropping a note to let you know that this version also fixed my problem. I've been having performance issues since the upgrade to 4.1.8. Win7, Duo, Cat6 cables, Netgear wndr3700 router. - Triple_tAspirantIt's still strange that the big difference in read and write remains that big isn't it?
Now I'm again on version 4.1.9T2 and disabled Jumbo Frames
Write speed is 11.9 MB/s
Read speed is 28.4 MB/s
I don't complain abt the read speed (it's good) but write is still to slow.
Did some more testing, installed an new PCI-E 1GB NIC. My onboard nic seams to have problems with Jumbo Frames because this new one handles it better.
again used Jumbo Frames, nic max was 7k (=7168? not 7936) ....
performance with IOmeter was:
Read: 36.50
Write 14.02
Disabled Jumbo Frames again on both results:
Read: 36.02
Write: 17.95
So my suggestion, DISABLE Jumbo Frames! This is different from the performance advice as mentioned by Netgear I suppose....
With both setup Jumbo Frames decreae the speed. - Triple_tAspirantTried yet another NIC, this time from netgear (GA311). Again the same
If Jumbo Frames on the NIC is off write speed drops to 6MB/s
Jumbo Frames off on both gives a bit better performance than Jumbo Frames on on both.
So even netgear NIC does not react as expected on Jumbo Frames.
Finall results:
IOMeter read: 35,75 MB/s
IOMeter write: 22,12 MB/s
Copy largefile
read: 23,3 MB/s
write: 15,4 MB/s
