Problem with rsync --delete

Hello all,

I'm probably about to show a degree of noobishness here, as I'm only starting out on this, so I'll don my flame suit :)

I've got a problem setting up an rsync backup from a Ubuntu client to the ReadyNAS NVX (using ssh). I'm trying to use the following command :

 rsync -avx --progress --delete --numeric-ids /datafolder/ root@nas1:/rsyncshare/

When I do, I get the following error :

The ReadyNAS OS volume cannot be used as an rsync source or destination.
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(600) [sender=3.0.5]

However, if I omit the "--delete" option, then everything works fine (except it won't do the delete, obviously)

I'm using FW4.2.8 on the NVX, and Ubuntu 9.10 on the client

So.... what am I doing wrong - or how do I do it differently?

Have you set permissions appropriately for Rsync for the relevant share on the NVX?

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure what you mean - it logs in as root, and there's no options in frontview for the share setup, so I thought that'd let it do anything? I have the keys set up, and it works without the "delete" option, and sets the permissions, etc OK. Where else should I look?

In Frontview under Shares > Share Listing, you should be able to check Rsync permissions for the relevant share.
  • yep, we're talking about the same screen. The only things I can set are the Access=read/write, IP addresses to allow, username/passwords (blank since I'm using ssh keys), and the section where you add keys.

I don't know why it isn't working with those settings. Hopefully someone with experience at using the rsync command will know why.
  • Just a *bump* if I may...

Does anyone have any ideas on this - any help would be much appreciated :)
  • If you are curious, I tried today using rsync for the first time with my ReadyNas Duo. I don't get any errors of your kind, but the "--delete" options is simply ignored!
  • lol... I completely forgot about this issue.

I never got it resolved. For the purpose, it was good enough to not use the delete function and start the backup afresh every so often.

I'm not responsible for that particular device any more, but I guess it's still running like that
