Just got my first Mac and had the same issue trying to print to my Canon MP280. Managed to solve the problem by installing as a Windows printer using the lasted Canon driver.
The location for the printer was added as smb://192.168.x.x/MP280_series
Initially I had authentication problems which were resolved by running keychain and adding a user and password for the entry MP280_series.
Interestingly the only user I have set up on my readyNas is the admin, but current password didn't work, for some reason. I had to use the password prior to my last readyNas firmware upgrade, somewhat odd, perhaps someone could explain.
Anyway thanks for all the posts, now have the printer working. Being new to Macs I had no idea what smb and keychains where a couple of hours ago!
