Purpose of iTunes Server?
OK, sorry for the basic question here... my wife just got an iPod (we've been an Apple-free household until very recently). I installed iTunes on her PC and was able to add all of our music (MP3) to the library just by browsing to the folder on the ReadyNAS. The iTunes server is not currently enabled on our NAS. So what does the Firefly iTunes Server add? Is it needed?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt allows you to stream DRM-free music from your NAS to iTunes on your Mac (library would appear as shared library in iTunes). Sounds like you don't need to use it. The Firefly server won't stream to an iPod.
- gingamonkeyAspirantCould it be possible to update Firefly with the ability to work with iTunes Home Sharing?
If this was enabled, it would mean you could stream from the NAS directly to an iPhone/iPod.... and if connected to a docking bay in the lounge/dining room, this would be a godsend for me! :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Highly unlikely. I think Firefly (3rd party project) only gets updates these days when an iTunes update breaks existing functionality.
What you possibility want is forked-daapd which definitely won't be coming to Sparc (e.g. Duo v1). I don't know about the other platforms. - clblackmanAspirantYou can get an application called 8-player for the ipod, its a dlna client, works very well with my readynas duo (sparc).
