What NAS are you using, and what firmware is it running?
Are you using HTTP or HTTPS when you access remotely? Have you checked that the port is open (your ISP might be blocking it).

ReadyNAS 102, firmware 6.6.0
Using HTTP.
Have found that ISP is blocking the port. Have forwarded an alternative port from external to port 80 on internal. Then use [ipaddress]:externalport. Works fine.
