Server Crash - unrecoverable (RN3138)
Hi All, my ReadyNas does not boot anymore. Only the power LED is lit all others are off. The Network LED flashes when I plug in the ethernet cable. I cannot enter the boot menu anymore (Yes I know...
That's very unusual. I don't recall the same issue leading to hardware replacement being run into that often.
Have you tried changing power cables?
Have you tried connecting the NAS power directly into a power outlet bypassing the UPS?
Is the serial number of your unit in the range covered by the Service Note for RN3130, RN3138, WC7500, and WC7600v2

Yes when exchanging the 2nd server I exchanged the cables as well.

No, but since I had the issue with two independent (one brand new) UPS I don't think it is an issue with the UPS. But I can try next time.

No it is a different serial number starting with 4HMB7BEWxxxx

I don't know yet whether I want to exchange the server again. I'm considering either upgrading to another model or even another brand. I really love the system when it is running and I would like to avoid to switch to something else but as you can imagine my confidence is near zero now.
Q: What would be the next (better) model instead of the RN3138? Must be rackbased and should have 4 trays.

Actually I found various articles about the RN3138 (and other models) that NetGear is considering to replace. The root cause is the Intel Atom chip with the symptom that the server will not boot anymore after a while (see here for example). So to me this seems to apply in my case.
Q: Is it possible to order/exchange the RN3138 with another processor?

I asked you if your serial number was in the range in Service Note for RN3130, RN3138, WC7500, and WC7600v2 because "affected units might experience higher-than-normal hardware failure rates after a few years of operation".
I do think that support is the best place for us to follow up with you on what you are facing.
Our engineers examined the latest failed unit and noticed that there are clear signs that the internal flash had been manually formatted with the original files copied back. This broke the boot environment so the system was unable to boot. USB Boot Recovery would have resolved that. Note that not all USB keys are compatible.
It's rare that a problem would require formatting the internal flash to resolve.
