Re-use of a disc formally used in a Duo v1

I have replaced a 1TB drive in my ReadyNAS Duo v1 with a new 3TB drive. Now I want to use my 1TB drive as an external USB hard drive. I have put it in an external cabinet and connected it to both my Mac and PC, but neither of them mounts it. My Mac just ignores it completely and my PC acknowledges that a USB devise has been connected, but says "Insert a disc.".

I assume that I need to format the disc, but that is a bit complicated when my computer doesn't connect to it. I have no idea how to solve this so any help would be very much appreciated.

I don't now if it matters but the disc was configured as RAID0 (Flex RAID) on the NAS.

  • My problem seems to be due to the external cabinet, which must be broken. I tried using another cabinet and then it worked as it should. :) The disc was mounted to the computer and I could re-format it without any problems.
  • If you are using Windows 7, find Disk Management from the Control Panel:

    Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools\Computer Management

Then choose Disk Management from the menu on the left hand side.

You should then be able to see your disk and reformat it.
  • I am going to preempt the next question -
I have replaced a 1TB drive in my ReadyNAS Duo v1 with a new 3TB drive

The Duo v1 does not work with drives larger than 2 TB
