I'm not sure to be honest. The guidance for resolving the issue I've found on forums has been to add "strict allocate = yes" to the smb.conf file, although people seem to have found mixed results. I thought I'd try 4.1.12 before making SAMBA config changes as I have a number of Windows 7 computers backing up to the same share and I don't want to break those.
The information I've seen to date is that the issue relates to changes in the implementation of SMB in Windows 8, but nothing definitive about a particular version of SAMBA which addresses the issue.
