Ready NAS Duo - Lost permissions after damaged disk 1 replaced
Recently lost drive one, replaced with new raw drive and now have lost permissions to modify drive! Suggestions?

Hi Jenn and Stephen,
First Jenn:
media share:
couldn't do them both in same snip, sorry.
backup share:
No change... no write permission.
Stephen:
I set these as shown. Applied, but they disappeared. Waited for popup showing completion.
Still unable to drag and drop to either share (backup or media)
Once I finish a complete backup (probably in the morning) I will be ready to take drastic measures.

Hello Phil_in_CA,
After backing up data and before proceeding to factory reset, try OS reinstall from the boot menu first then see if that helps.

Hi JennC,
It has taken quite a while to get the NAS backed up, but it is now complete and I am ready to work on further steps to solve the permissions problem.
I intend to reload the operating system on my NAS Duo v.1 as time permits.
Please allow this thread to stay open for a few days, while I attempt to solve my problem of not being able to write to my NAS.
Sincerely,
Phil_in_CA

JennC and StephenB,
The suggestion of a OS reload was a good one, as now that that is complete everything is back to normal on my NAS.
There is an added bonus to this, as well, and that is that I did not have to delete and restore all the data (1TB +/-) over USB 2.0!
Thanks for hanging in with me. If there is a next time, I will have that ACE up my sleeve in advance.

Hello Phil_in_CA,
I can see that you have already marked this solved. Were you able to resolve it?

Hello Phil_in_CA,
That's great! Sometimes OS reinstall helps though we rarely use that except for password reset. Feel free to post any suggestions, comments and questions. We appreciate your contribution to the community!

Hi JennC,
Something's up... while shuffling files on the NAS, all of a sudden, I was locked from writing files again! In the blink of an eye...
Then, while I was trying to figure out what happened, the NAS was no longer "seen" by Frontview!
Is it possible that the NAS has malware? I don't have anything running on it, save DLNA and iTunes. No addons either.
The NAS sits behind a hardware firewall (U-Verse modem/router with no ports opened)...
I have had enough hand wringing over this, and am going to perform a total reset, as a last resort. Will advise after that is finished... it may take a day or more to restore all the data, though.

Hello Phil_in_CA,
Please also make sure the LAN cable is good and the NAS is plugged in to the firewall router properly, maybe you can try another LAN port on the router.

Well, this is interesting...
During a resync, the main activity light was blinking rapidly as if it was moving data and the fan was full speed. Since Frontview said it was resyncing, I left it running all night. Funny, I don't understand why it would take hours to resync when there is nothing on the discs except folders! Further, I have never seen the fan run full speed, except at boot up and only for a few seconds to flush the cabnet with fresh air.
Anyway, this morning it was still blinking and the fan at full, so I shut it down and restarted it. The activity light has gone back to what I could call normal (a blink now and then), BUT, the fan is running full... very annoying (my wife's computer sits under the shelf where the NAS sits... she's giving me the "stink eye" about the noise. Don't blame her, but I can't fix it. Looked everwhere in FView... fan at 5700 rpm and recalibrate hasn't done anything.
Otherwise, the NAS seems normal... but, I am suspicious! I look forward to getting this device all the way back to normal.
Thoughts on the fan issue, and what I can do?
Thanks,
Phil

RAID sync is below the file system level - every block in the volume is synced, even free space.

I don't know of any way to change the maximum fan speed on the duo.
Have you checked the disk temps?
- Phil_in_CAApr 08, 2017Aspirant
Hi SteoheB,
Thanks for the reply.
I will check the temps after I reinstall and restart the NAS and let it run for a while. I shut it down and pulled it so I could check to make sure it was clean inside, just in case that was creating a heating issue (it was clean and no issue there). From a cold start, the fan would settle into slow speed (or stop?) after boot, so it still makes little sense that it would keep running... Now that I have checked the NAS, and it is cold, I will restart it after my wife is done with her computer for the day, as it was making her less than happy. In the past, the NAS was always quiet after boot, so it never bothered her before.
I will report back. Thanks again!
Phil
