Ready Nas DUO & upgrade options..

Hi there..

ill explain a lil history an what im trying to acheieve....

originaly brought a netgear stora... what a pile of £$%^ that was... tho in saying that it is "still" providing a central store location at the miss's house...

last week brought a readyNAS DUO... again feeling a little glum as its not quite the box i needed it to be... (i really should of researched more before buying.. espically as the ultra 2 is only £75 more in terms of buying it driveless..)

right ive got firefly to successfully stream music out onto the internet by port forwarding 3689 from router to my NAS using dyndns too as im on a dynamic ip (virgin media)
now... this works ok.. bit basic but is a workable method..

i also SSH rooted the box.. this was so i could create a SSH tunnel for listening to music when port 3689 is not an option (like at work).
this also works as intended, i now have squeezecenter indexing my music an serving my SSH client.. very crude it feels as using softsqueeze which although is functional... it is not ideal....

now what im finding that is really getting me down is i just spent money on a box that cannot serve video files over the internet... (now im not talking transcoding on the fly... im talking it cannot even stream native video content... <---------------i assume my findings are correct there?)
am i right in that assumption? there is NO possible way to stream video?

if not? has any one got any suggestions on using my pc as a server for streaming video? an the NAS being the store for the content?? running win 7 64bit, pretty good with routing & working wan/lan networks, would like to know what other programs people are using to do video, an ports etc?

quick question regarding firefly? is there anyway to map it to another port like say 20??? or 443 or anything thing that a corporate inviroment is likely to have open. cant see an option to do this....

got a feeling the responce is that the duo will not...can not.. / just wont stream video.. fine.. but please some help with how i can??? :) btw the pc is on 24/7 n e ways....

many thanks for reading...

oh one last one... if at a later date i upgrade to a ultra, can i pull a drive out of the duo and just slip it into a ultra an boot?? or will i have to copy the data manually accross to the new box!?

Do you think they would let you exchange it for the Ultra? It's really the best option for what you want to do. The x86 platform (Ultra, Pro) has the necessary CPU horsepower to run the required add-ons and there are a number already developed by the ReadyNAS community in addition to the official add-ons.

You'll have to copy it across to the new box, as the CPU architecture on the Duo uses a sparc-based CPU and the Ultra uses x86.

IIRC, you should be able to stream video using HTTP. I'll see if I can locate the thread where this was discussed.
