There is no installation needed on Windows (and no need for the installation disk).
The NAS should do a fresh factory install when you power it up with the two blank disks installed. If you've already done that, then you should check the status with RAIDar.
There are two potential issues that you will need to resolve.
One is that Microsoft is deprecating SMB 1.0 - so it is likely disabled on your PC. You'll need to enable the SMB 1 client in Windows using "turn windows features on or off" before you can access the shares with SMB.
The second is that TLS 1.0 is no longer supported in most browsers. IE still does support it, so you'll need to use that to access the NAS web ui. If you don't recall how to do that, you need to browse to https://nas-ip-address/admin (using the actual IP address of the NAS of course). The default admin password for the v2 ReadyNAS is password.

Just an update on my progress (so-far)....
I 'reset' the NAS to factory defaults using the small (almost hidden) reset aperture on the back of the unit and installed the two 2GB HDD's whic were used originally. Of course, the drives were 'blanked' before installing. On power-up the NAS went through it's bulid routine on drive 1, and once that settled, moved over to drive two to do a build duplicate of drive 1 (presumably). The drive 1 green LED has settled to steady-green eventually, then drive 2 LED started blinking - presuming drive 2 is still being 'prepared'?
Do I need to wait until both drives are in a 'ready' [with both drive LED's in a steady state] state before I can attempt a login as admin using admin/password ? I did attempt to do this while drive 2 was getting itself ready and managed to reach the admin login screen, but when I put the correct credentials in, I kept being returned to the admin login screen. This was actually done using Linux Mint via Firefox.
I even went as far as to put windows XP on an old laptop to get closer to the original O/S used at the time, but I did worse there than on Linux - which reported back "This web site might not support the TLS 1.2 protocol, which is the minimum version supported by Firefox" - which is basically one of the things you suspected.
If my memory serves me correctly, does the admin login need to happen within 15 minutes if initiating the NAS build for some reason? I've probably confused this with something else, but thought I'd be as well mentioning it.
HDD number 2 is still flashing away doing it's 'thing' as I type this information, Steven.
If there's anything you'd like to add at this point, I'd greatly appreciate it.
