Just to close this off, in my case it definately needed a new power supply. I replaced it myself with one from ebay, advertised for the ReadyNas. With shipping it was around $100, but didn't require any repinning or changing. I disassembled the NVX and re-assembled with the replacement power supply and the NAS picked up where it left off.

RND4000 (NV+) and RNDX400E (NVX) use the same power supply -> you can use the power supply of one into the other, but they're not same architecture.
RNDU4000 (Ultra 4), RNDP4000 (Pro 4), RN314 and RNDX400E (NVX) are all x86 -> you can use the HDDs of one into the other.
RND4000v2 (NV+v2) is not the same architecture as neither RND4000 (NV+) nor RNDX400E (NVX). And I don't know about its PSU.
