Do I need to open a port on the router?
No, there is no port forwarding needed (DLNA is a purely local service).

I use various, but mostly All connect on either an Iphone or Androide. I find the Androide version runs best. I cast to Chromecast units.
For verification, I fired up the older Linksys router, created a tester WiFi, connected the NAS, and that environment still works.
I somehow like the new router, as it covers nearly all of my house with WiFi, I had to have a repeater on the Linksys.- StephenBJul 23, 2018Guru - Experienced User
Can you tell if it works on wired ethernet? I'm thinking the problem might be specific to WiFi?
The VLC client is able to play from a dlna server, there is more information here: https://www.vlchelp.com/access-media-upnp-dlna/

Nope, wired isn't working either, DLNA remains hidden or inaccesable.
I use the VLC every now and then, but its Chromecast compatiblity isn't fully functional yet, I think - maybe the lacking compatibility is me ;-)
VLC can see the server though, but it's the SMB server, not the DLNA
