ReadyNAS 104 - weird issue - repeating email notifications

This box has been running fine for ... I don't even know how long.... the power on hours for the three oldest drives appears to have rolled after maybe 65k hours and now show 16k... so 9 years? It's running 4x Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives. I feel pretty fortunate that I've only had to replace one drive so far!

I have backups set up that run nightly for different folders. My Tuesday incremental backup started at 00:05:04 and ended 2 seconds later. Not a problem as nothing had changed in the source folder. Every 10 minutes since, like clockwork, I've received a successfully completed backup job email. I think the only thing I've changed was to add a second email address to the notification as I was moving off gmail to protonmail. I've tried running the backup manually to see if that would clear something out. I've removed the second email address from the notifications. I've rebooted the box. I've even deleted the backup job completely, but the message keeps being resent. And it keeps being sent to the new email address also which is no longer in the notifications configuration.

I did just notice something interesting... I went to check to see if there are any firmware updates (it's running 6.10.10) and got the message "Cannot connect. Communications Error. Check your internet connection, DNS settings, or proxy settings". Internet is fine (I'm using VNC to access the NAS remotely right now, and clearly the box is sending out emails), and I have no proxy or DNS settings configured for the NAS and never have. I changed my internet provider 5 months ago and the change was pretty seamless inside my home network.

My router is a Nighthawk RAX45 with a pretty vanilla setup and when I check to see if there's an update to the firmware, I get the message "No new firmware version available" (it's running V1.0.16.132_2.0.92), so it appears to be able to connect back to the Netgear servers just fine. I haven't changed any configuration settings on the router in a long time either.

Any help would be appreciated!

Netgear took down the update server some months ago.  All ReadyNAS products are now end of life, and Netgear clearly has exited the storage business.

I suggest removing email notifications altogether, and then see if the emails stop.

If they do, then try re-adding the address.

  • Thank you , Stephen.  I knew the product was EOL... didn't know they'd pulled down the site.

I've cleared out the contact information and I'll know in 2 minutes if that worked, but I have a feeling that there's queued request sitting somewhere that just keeps getting attempted every 10 minutes and doesn't know that it's succeeded.

I agree that is the problem.  I am hoping that disabling email notifications altogether will clear it out.

  • It looks like that worked!  Now to add all the notification stuff back in and if it stays gone!  TY

      Let us know what happens!

  • I completely removed the email notification information and waited.  No further messages came.  I re-entered the server & user information for notifications, ran one of the backups and to the expected result.  Thanks again!
