Next time it happens, try disconnecting the RN104 ethernet cable, and see if the speed issue disappears.
nope a soft reboot does not resolve the issue, i normally have to factory reset the router 2 or 3 times before regular speeds return and then the problem can come back anywhere between 5 minutes and a day later, i did just try unplugging the cable from the router and the issue was the same, still very slow download speeds.

I don't think its the NAS. It's far more likely that your router is dying.
Maybe try living w/o the NAS for a couple days, and see if the problem happens when it is disconnected.
the first time this happened i called virgin media and they ran some tests and told me to reboot the router as it has been clogged up with too many requests, something along those lines anyway, could that be to do with the ReadyNAS? i will try the router out without the nas drive connected and see it it continues too happen.
