This didn't fix a thing. Still getting connection dropouts and frozen web UI. Finder completely hangs due to this, three times today. It's reaching to point that I can no longer get anything done.
Fix it. Now. And I'm never updating again. Ever.

Please try the method EKroboter suggested to cancel the BTSFS balancing task which can use up high CPU causing hang:
After SSH into the box, issue the command "btrfs balance cancel /data" where /data is the path to your volume.
