The volume was fully allocated and the metadata allocation was full.
Via Teamviewer I was able to change this and now a balance is running. As a balance has never successfully been run on the volume before this will take quite some time.
I would recommend scheduling a balance to run every few weeks or so at a time when the NAS is being used lightly.

Thank you StephenB and mdgm.
The current NAS firmware is 6.2.5 (upgraded from 6.2 during my efforts).
Both volumes are RAID-0.
The logs are sent as instructed.
I also wish to say that after reading the original thread which I posted in, my impression is that the customer service today has improved significantly since then.

The 8TB volume needs a balance to be run on it. A balance should be scheduled to be run regularly e.g. every few weeks.
