Thanks MDGM, that explains it and Yes, I plan to use the Netgear web interface for the direct copy. as I said, once I get my first transfer of all the current files I want to load up on it I will be fine, after that it will only be a few files at a time. I will use the USB 3.0 and the interface to do the transfer and go from there.

If you used the web admin interface it will be a direct copy from the USB disk connected to the NAS to the internal share in the NAS.
If you use Windows Explorer (e.g. \\ip.address.of.nas - note the slashes go the opposite direction to a URL) then the files would be copied across your network to your PC then back again to the NAS. Your PC would see two different network shares and would need to copy the files temporarily to your PC to copy the files between them.
