Unfortunately, on system status page Capacity still shows as 3.63TB and has not increased.
How to I tell the system it has greater capacity?
Sometimes it takes a while for the expansion to complete. If it still says 3.63 TB now, try a reboot.
When did you purchase your RN312? If you purchased it new between 1 June 2014 and 31 May 2016, then you have lifetime chat support via my.netgear.com.

After two restarts, the ReadyNAS 312 still shows only 3.63TB capacity (instead of nearly 8TB, the way it should) and the "free space" value is the same as before the drives were replaced.
What else can I do?

This ReadyNAS 312 was purchased February 2014, although we did purchase a ReadyNAS 516 in July 2014, which will soon need a similar vertical expansion.

Unfortunately the RN312 isn't entitled to lifetime chat support then.
You could PM mdgm-ntgr and ask if he is willing to analyze your logs.
Other options include
(a) paid support (like ~$75 for per incident support)
(b) Do a factory reset, rebuild the NAS and restore the data from backup
(c) attempt to complete the expansion manually using ssh/shell access.
Are you comfortable with ssh?
