Gearhead support was a success. With a combination of chat, telephone calls and remote access my NAS has been fixed remotely.
I was quite impressed with what can be done remotely but a bit of a wake-up call for me. I didn’t loose any data but I am now actively looking for a back-up solution.
LaCie STGB20000400 20 TB (2 x 10 TB) 2big Dock Is on my shortlist, anybody got any other thoughts?

I don't think gearhead will work for this. But you can certainly access paid support via my.netgear.com.

I have no experience with it. But you could get an RN214 with 2x10TB Jbod for somewhat less, and you'd have two bays for expansion. I use secondary NAS for backup (making sure I install new software on the backup NAS first, and wait a few days after that before putting it on the primary).
I also use Crashplan backup for disaster recovery. That runs on a PC that has the primary NAS volume mapped to a drive letter.

Thanks for your views. I am going to go with the LaCie and have just ordered one. For my solution I want something that is simply a reliable hard drive no more. I may even disconnect and reconnect periodically
