Since updating to OS6 destroys the OS4.2 data, that's not a solution when someone is trying to recover their data..
I think there will be more and more of these cases popping up. There should be an automated VPD signing service from Netgear now that mods no longer have time to do this. What a shame...
OP has the option to put all drives into a linux tower and run "R-Studio for Linux" to recover files. But if the VPD has exploded, then the ReadyNAS is another headed for the garbage pile. Unless you want to short/hold down the backup button and keep a USB in there the whole time
