As far as I can tell, the certification is for back-end storage. Hopefully Netgear will clarify.
I've seen a couple of posts from folks who have gotten virtualbox running on a ReadyNAS, but nothing on VSphere.

It’s for back-end storage, the data store. You’d need an ordinary server for a ESXi host.
