We may be running into a similar problem.

My recommendation is that you unplug the usb drive from the duo, plug the drive in again, then verify you can write to the usb drive. In windows, navigate to \\nasname\USB_HDDn\... and copy a file there. If you can write to it, then start your backup.
So I think I'm at a point where this workaround 'works' for me... curious to see if it 'works' for you. Then maybe we could figure out a better solution, or more troubleshooting.
