I don't know why you have the error that you have, and good luck sorting it out, but I thought the correct procedure for doing what you wanted would have been to put the new disk (same size or larger) into slot one WITHOUT powering down.

I always recommend hot-insertion, since that gives the NAS a clear indication that a drive is removed and the new one inserted.
But installing a blank disk with the NAS powered down also works.
