I also think I've figured out a long-hand way of starting from scratch, by booting the NAS with a fully formatted disk, which then went through the whole startup process....

Normally you'd do this with a blank disk. The NAS will do a fresh factory install if the disk(s) are blank. But an NTFS formatted disk might have the same effect.
It doesn't take much longer actually, once you get it started you go through the full setup either way.
Still, the reset should have worked. Were you following the steps as list on page 24-25 here? http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/ReadyNAS_Duov2_NV+v2_HW_en_23-Mar-12.pdf

Exactly as per instruction (I had the same document open). At Point 5, where it is meant to toggle through the boot mode options, initially the lower half of the LCD was was blank, and when I pressed Backup button "NORMAL" came up. Without letting the reset button go, I tried pressing the Backup button more times but it wouldn't change beyond NORMAL.
Regardless, I think I've been able to do what I needed to do. Just a bit annoying it doesn't do what the manual says...
