thanks for replying.
yes, it tries to connect but wants to reset my password which i don't want to do, in case it fries the existing access via windows explorer.
what baffles me is that yesterday, access to 'shares' etc worked fine, but today its 'offline' when it clearly isn't !
thanks for trying to help.

Your version OS 6.2.2 is 3.1/2 years out of date
You can update it BUT YOU MUST follow this update path:
ReadyNAS 102, 104, and 2120 must not be updated directly to 6.9.x from 6.3.x or older firmware. They must first be updated to either 6.2.5 or 6.3.5 then to 6.5.2 and then onto 6.9.x.
You can find the download files HERE and then click "Previous Versions" lower right, download each file and use System/Settings/Manual Install Firmware to upload each of the files, Rebooting each time
OR you could use the GUI System/Overview/Check for updates which I assume will update correctly (but I am not sure it will) so I would do it manually. as above.
Getting to the current Version of OS 6 may help your problem, you need to download the ARM versions of OS 6

thanks for your detailed response, Bedlam1, the oldest available is 6.4.2 arm, so i will try that, though i'm surprised it wont update to the latest version straight away - poor programming perhaps ?
i vaguely recall seeing firmware upgrades yesterday, so if i can find it agaain i'll give it a try!
I will keep this thread informed.
cheers
tim.

DO NOT USE 6.4.2
You best try using the NAS to "Check for Updates" I think
And Backup your data 1st as a precaution
