thanks for replying.
yes, it tries to connect but wants to reset my password which i don't want to do, in case it fries the existing access via windows explorer.
what baffles me is that yesterday, access to 'shares' etc worked fine, but today its 'offline' when it clearly isn't !
thanks for trying to help.

Your version OS 6.2.2 is 3.1/2 years out of date
You can update it BUT YOU MUST follow this update path:
ReadyNAS 102, 104, and 2120 must not be updated directly to 6.9.x from 6.3.x or older firmware. They must first be updated to either 6.2.5 or 6.3.5 then to 6.5.2 and then onto 6.9.x.
You can find the download files HERE and then click "Previous Versions" lower right, download each file and use System/Settings/Manual Install Firmware to upload each of the files, Rebooting each time
OR you could use the GUI System/Overview/Check for updates which I assume will update correctly (but I am not sure it will) so I would do it manually. as above.
Getting to the current Version of OS 6 may help your problem, you need to download the ARM versions of OS 6

thanks for your detailed response, Bedlam1, the oldest available is 6.4.2 arm, so i will try that, though i'm surprised it wont update to the latest version straight away - poor programming perhaps ?
i vaguely recall seeing firmware upgrades yesterday, so if i can find it agaain i'll give it a try!
I will keep this thread informed.
cheers
tim.

DO NOT USE 6.4.2
You best try using the NAS to "Check for Updates" I think
And Backup your data 1st as a precaution

hi, i tried 'check for updates' but it told me there wre none - which i think is its default.
i downloaded and unzipped 6.4.2 and tried to upload the img file, but it refused me, with the msg ERROR-SERV-UNREC.
am starting to remember why computers annoy me !!

No, 6.2.5 is still out there : https://kb.netgear.com/29498/ReadyNAS-OS-Version-6-2-5-RN102-RN104-Only
But I think you should resolve your issue before trying to upgrade your firmware. Otherwise you risk making it worse.
I'm a little confused on your current access
- Can you access the NAS shares through file explorer?
- Can you access the NAS web ui with https://nas-ip-address/admin
If you can access the shares, then I agree with bedlam1 that you should make a backup before you do anything else.

(been away)
back again. have got the 6.2.5 img file ready to upload, (thankyou for link StephenB) but even though the folders & files are clearly accessible via windows explorer, when I try to upload the img file via the admin/browse screen, it immediately says 'ERROR-SERV-UNREC' then tries to reconnect with the comm lost screen.
i have rebooted it with no effect.
the nas drive IS my backup, and the files are all presently accessible, but i do actually want to delete a few old backups, which i can do in explorer, but they must be going into a hidden recycle bin, as the free space is staying the same !
is it worth trying to reset to factory default ? or will that delete all my data ?
am sorely tempted to buy a different make and just copy it all across and send this little beggar to the scrapheap !
thanks for listening.
