ReadyNAS Pro 6 Upgrade from 4.2.28 to OS6 fails repeatedly
This is confusing. I converted my other Pro 6 from 4.2.26 to OS6 back in the winter without too much grief. Now following AMRivlin's instructions OS6-now-works-on-x86-Legacy results in the machine c...
- Aug 05, 2016Answering my own question here. The instructions in the forums are subtly wrong or misleading depending upon how you look at it. The relatively precise instructions here http://netgear.nas-central.org/wiki/OS6_on_Legacy_x86 Are the correct ones. The key ambiguities the wiki instructions resolve are BOTH binaries should be uploaded via the firmware update mechanism The factory reset will occur automatically (do not hold the reset pin to get to the Boot Menu manually)

I don't believe you need the PREP4TOR6 image anymore; hopefully mdgm-ntgr will chimei in.

Perhaps so. In any case, the instructions, which are in what three places?, should be identical, correct, and unambiguous.

The instructions are mostly old posts, and the process shifted over time. I'm not sure who put the information on nascentral.
This second procedure in this post is I think the correct one: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/OS6-now-works-on-x86-Legacy-WARNING-NO-NTGR-SUPPORT/m-p/897023/highlight/true#M50465
OS6 in 3 Steps:
2. Upgrade firmware in Frontview 4.2 (installing above file)
3. Reboot & factory default via boot menuBut I haven't done this procedure myself, so hopefully mdgm-ntgr will confirm

The Prep add-on avoids the need to do the manual factory default. It's never been needed but it is nice to avoid needing to use the boot menu especially if the NAS is at a remote site.
So you:1. Install the Prep add-on
2. Install the R4toR6_latest.bin
3. Do the reboot you are prompted to do.Let the system do its thing. The prep add-on leaves behind will tell the NAS to do a factory reset automatically at the appropriate time avoiding the need to use the boot menu to do it manually.
