ReadyNAS slow write speed

We have very very slow write speed saving open files. eg 280MB file takes 10 minutes to save??, however only takes 5 seconds to paste same file from PC to NAS. Takes 20 seconds to save same fil...

6.9.5 was just released. Netgear usually waits a bit before they put it on the update servers. You could manually download it and install it if you like.

While Retired_Member's suggestions can provide some speedup, I don't think they are likely to help here, since the file can copied at a more normal performance with drag/drop. So I suggest not changing them just yet.
Instead, look at the share settings via the web UI (clicking on the settings wheel for the share). Click on "network access", then "SMB", then "advanced". If the "strict sync" option is checked, then uncheck it. Then retest, and see if the file save works more quickly.
Either way, please try using NasTester ( http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance ) on the PC to test performance, and share the results here. If you can't connect the PC with gigabit ethernet, then please give us some information on the wifi connection.

Thanks for fast response and you have solved our issue!! Believe it was unchecking 'strict sync' as you described. Our 280MB file now saves in 20 sec instead of 20minutes!! what a relief! Thanks again.
I have left the disc spin down function on also..

That should be fine.
SMB transport encryption can also slow down your particular NAS, because the RN300 series doesn't have hardware support for encryption. If your security policies don't require SMB transport encryption you can try turning it off and see if you get any further speedup.
Personally I'd leave quota and snapshots enabled, as I think they are worth the performance hit. Note that enabling quota for the volume gives you better visibility into volume space usage (which is helpful even if you don't set quotas).
For snapshots, you do need to take the "churn" into account, as the space needed can build up quickly. If you have applications that update files in place frequently (for instance, databases), then you shouldn't use snapshots on those shares. I recommend using custom snapshots instead of the default "smart" snapshots - setting a max retention, so the snapshot use will continue to grow over time. With BTRFS you do want to keep at least 20% free space.
Running the balance and defrag maintenance functions periodically can also help maintain performance. However, they can take a while to complete (especially if they've never been run), and performance will drop while they are running. So perhaps try running a balance over the weekend (assuming usage is light then). You can cancel it if the performance impact is too much. I run each of the maintenance functions once every three months.

You can nearly completely avoid the necessary effort to defragment by using a special feature of app smb-plus. There is an option to pre-allocate diskspace when writing files to the nas' volumes. This feature will most probably make sure, that the files are written unfragmented. The minor degradation in writing performance is so marginal, that it is more than worth to switch on this feature.
