ReadyNAS Ultra 2 now useless? Windows requires SMB2 to access my files

I'll preface this question by saying that I know almost nothing about networking. I have had this ReadyNAS Ultra 2 set up as a RAID and using it to store my photos, videos and art files for years. It's been great and easy to use. The drives are tested daily and the firmware has been updated automatically. When a drive failed, I was able to replace and rebuild the array quickly and easily.

Now after some Windows updates I cannot access the files. I cannot even map to the drive because it "requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol which is unsafe."

I don't understand half of what I'm reading on the forums but I gather that this device runs an OS called SAMBA which itself is obsolete. There seems to be some solution that involves losing everything on the drives, but here's the deal: My life is on those drives. I purchased this device so that I could store terabytes worth of precious files without fear of a single drive failure.

Tell me there's an easy solution, please! Preferably one that a layman can understand.

Samba is not the OS (Operating System), it's the software the NAS uses for the SMB protocol. The NAS OS is based on Debian Linux.

RAIDiator-x86 uses an old version of samba with experimental SMB2 support, but that's disabled.

The easiest solution would be to re-enable SMB1 support on your Windows 10 PC.

Though doing so is unsupported your ReadyNAS can run ReadyNAS OS 6 which has a newer version of samba with SMB3 support, but upgrading to that does require a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).

There are more things that can go wrong than a single drive failure. If your data is precious to you then you should backup your data regularly rather than just store it on the one device.
