ReadyNAS ultra 6 stuck at "ReadyNAS" at boot

The powersupply to the unit stopped working after a power outage.

Opened the case and plugged in Corsair RM550 to the motherboard and the disks. The unit powers up, but the USB and backup status LED is constantly green and the status display screen shows "ReadyNAS".

The boot menu is not working, and the only way to power of the unit is to hold the power button for 5 seconds.

The number 102 12 17 is printed inside the casing.

I see that others has had identical issues that need custom solutions.

  • The unit will say "ReadyNAS" if the 5V is present -- it takes nothing else.  Your first step of using an external ATX supply was the right one, as the supply alone is the usual suspect.  Unfortunately, it sounds like your NAS has something more wrong with it than just the power supply that is preventing it from booting.  A power surge (which may have accompnied the power outage) or a failing power supply can take other things with it.

Is the condition the same whether or not you have drives in it? (I suspect it is.)  There are basically no replaceable components in the Ultra6 other than the power supply and RAM.  So, assuming you know that power supply is good and the 24-pin connection (not visible in your photo) just isn't fully seated, I suspect it's time for a replacement NAS.

Do you have a backup of the data?  Had you upgraded to OS6?  If you did, then you can just move the drives over to a native OS6 system. Of course, finding a new ReadyNAS is pretty much impossible right now.

If you were still on RAIDiator 4.2.x and need to recover data (assuming the volume is OK, which may not be a valid assumption), there are ways to do that.    There is a way to do it with an OS6 NAS, but that presents the same issue of not being able to find one.  You can use a Linux system or boot disk, but that requires you connect all the drives to a computer.  A used replacement is an option, though some shy away from what can be a big unknow regarding condition.  You can move your drives into another Ultra6, an Ultra6Plus, a Pro6, a Pro Business Edition, or a Pro Pioneer.  If you have fewer than 6 drives installed, there are other options.  Depending on drive sizes, there are also rack-mount options.

Not sure what you mean by fully seated, so enclosed a picture of the 24 pin connector. The black is the new one from Corsair and the white one is the original.

I have backup of most data but not all, so it would be nice to get it to work. I'm still on radiator 4.2

I only have 4 drives installed. Using RAID setup, but I can't remember what raid type I selected.

If I move the drives to a new NAS unit will the raid configuration information be preserved or will the data be destroyed?

Can get my hands on an RNDU4000 version.

By "fully seated", I mean completely pushed in and latched. The connector in the photo is the right one (unlike some others, the 6-bay units use a standard pin-out).  The Ultra6 does not use the 4-pin square connector that the other 6-bay units do, just the 24-pin and 3 4-pin in-line Molex.

Since you have only four drives, the RNDU4000 will work with your volume, and that would be the easiest way to recover data. All the configuration of the NAS is on the drives, so everything will go with the volume.  On that type of system, the OS version  in flash "wins" if there is a mis-match between it and what's on the drives.  So it's best to first put in a scratch disk (on which everything will be wiped) to boot the NAS and then update to the latest (4.2.31) to insure the OS on your volume doesn't get downgraded.  If it has been converted to OS6, then converting back, to 4.2.31 is critical, but it's an extra couple steps than a simple OS update.  Let us know if you need to do that.
