Readynas usb share requires login
Readynas NV+ will not let attached USB drives (flash or HDD) be accessed through windows explorer. A username and password is demanded but no password seems to satisfy this demand.
When I access share listings through Frontview the USB listings are greyed out whilst the NAS shares are black and can be accessed through WE.
I have tried all the suggestions I have found on this forum but none work.
Help gratefully received. :(

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDid you just purchase? If so, you likely have a v2. What firmware are you running?
- petervgAspirantIt is NV+ v1 but I recently had to replace the disks as a brownout took out two disks. Did do a firmware update to 4.1.10.
Thanks - akira3dAspirantDid you hear of a solution to this problem? I just encountered this last night. I've been running 4.1.10 on my NV+ (v1) for awhile now, but can't recall the last time I tried to mount a USB drive attached to my NV+ from Windows Explorer (XP).
I tried the USB share add on fix I saw in other threads, but the problem persists.
From FrontView, I can format the USB drive and initiate backup jobs to it, so I know the NAS is seeing the USB drive. I have no issues accessing any of my NV+'s shares and can map the NV+'s root to a network drive using the NV+'s user and password. As you mentioned, no user/password combination I can think of will let me access the USB drive. - gheatly1AspirantSame here!! Craziest thing. I have the least security set on my ReadyNAS 1100 V4.1.10 and yet I can not access the USB share via either XP or Win7 Explorer. I get prompted for a User name and Password, for which no known user name or password works. On a Mac it complains of a permissions problem. Anyone have a solution??
- Has anyone found a solution?
I had to change a disk and now this appears. I have never had any network passwords and now I cannot access the USB disk... - Ki_Adi_MundiNETGEAR Employee Retiredguys, what's the cifs settings for your usb share ?
- tochkamAspirantThe same hardware and the same issue.
Radiator 4.1.14
cifs settings for my usb share identical with setting for default created media share except "Enable oplocks for this share." item is not checked.
But
'Advanced Options' tab looks like
Share folder owner: root
Share folder group: root
'Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files.' item is checked.
All rights settings are: Read/Write
It looks as if it's expecting for root password to access the share. Isn't it? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou can change the folder owner/group using the checkbox underneath (then click apply on the bottom right).
- tochkamAspirantYes I can, but it does not help. It keep asking for user/password on attempt to access share via Windows 7 explorer.
- EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
Have you tried ticking the checkbox "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders" in addition to changing the folder owner to "nobody" and group to "nogroup"? Click Apply. Have not tried it for USB shares but should also be available in the advanced Share Permission section of frontview.
Bye,
Eskender
