ReadyNAS will not boot / USB Recovery (RN31600)
Hi All, I have a 31600 that is failing to boot after a power outage. Unfortunately, the product is end-of-life. I had just recently upgraded the firmware, but had successfully rebooted after the ...

StephenB is that the same mode as using a paper clip to press the reset on the back while powering up? If so, then no, I get the same result of 2 messages showing "Booting" followed by the error message, with no option to select any more in between.
Yes - as described in the hardware manual ( http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS_%20OS6_Desktop_HM_EN.pdf )
If that doesn't work (sounds like it doesn't), then Netgear can't easily diagnose it - unless there is something they can do from TeamViewer. It's out of warranty, and Netgear doesn't offer servicing. JohnCM_S or Marc_V might have some ideas there - if they don't chime in here, you could send them a private message using the envelope link in the top right of the forum page.
To answer one of your earlier questions - you can migrate the disks to a newer NAS (including the RN42X, 52x, 62x platforms).

While I have found the OS6 native NAS are a bit less particular about the USB devices than legacy ones, USB3 ones will (in my experience) always fail. When you look for a USB2 one, try to get one with an access LED, as that can help you see that the NAS is doing something with it.
Since you read the other thread, I am assuming you already tried the test without any drives and it did not work. If that is not a valid assumption, then you may be premature in assessing the root cause of your failure is the same and has the same fix.

Sandshark : I tried things one more time this evening
* The USB stick I use has an LED, it blinks a couple of times before and during the display of the "Booting from External USB" message, so I am assuming it is being accessed
* Also tried the part with removing all 4 drives, tried booting both with and without USB recovery stick inserted.
Still getting the same mount_block_root+25e, at this point I am out of ideas and things to try

It does sound like you've done all the troubleshooting thast says it probably is the same root cause as the other poster, so USB recovery is likely the solution.
The access LED should do more than just blink during the recovery process. I suspect your drive is being "tested" and found deficient in some way, not really "accessed". Now, the question is whether it's the USB drive itself or something amiss with the recovery software on it.

Hi All
I had the same problem after the latest upgrade on my 316 but not my 314.
I created the USB recovery, just make sure to put the image in the x86 folder not the root.
The reset button is recessed on the back of the box, use a straightened paper clip and hold in while system boots.
It worked fine for me, hope this helps.
regards
Michael

I've attempted this with a few different older USB drives now, and have had no luck.
Question for those familiar: based on this article:
https://kb.netgear.com/23005/How-do-I-access-the-boot-menu-on-my-ReadyNAS-316-516-716When holding the reset button, I should be getting some sort of boot menu, from which I could select different options like memory test, disk test, and the one I actually want, OS Reinstall.
That menu does not appear at all. Is there a reason that it is not showing up? - SandsharkApr 30, 2020Sensei
Actually, OS Re-Install is not the same thing as USB recovery. OS Re-install re-installs the OS on the drives from the onboard flash. USB recovery re-writes the onboard flash from what's on the USB. USB recovery does not use the reset button at all. On a 316, it uses the OK button. See this article: How-do-I-use-the-USB-Recovery-Tool-on-my-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system .
Your lack of a boot menu is likely another sign of a corrupted internal flash on the NAS. USB recovery should also fix that.
- FiordhraoiApr 30, 2020AspirantGotcha. So what confused me then (I saw that article first) was this:
If your ReadyNAS system is an RN316, RN516, or RN716X:
After powering on the ReadyNAS system, wait for the backlight around the touchpad to turn off.
Instead of the Backup button, press and hold the OK button for up to 30 seconds, until the LCD confirms that the ReadyNAS is attempting to boot from the USB drive.
When I power on the system, the backlights turn on and never go off at all. There is no moment after I turn it on that the backlight around the touchpad is off. - huegliMay 02, 2020Aspirant
So I wanted to give an update on my RN314. Over the last week I
a) Went on Amazon to order a new ReadyNAS 626
b) Came across another USB stick i hadn't tried before
With the new USB stick (a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB, with an access LED), I did everything the same way I had done with the previous 3 USB sticks and ...
It worked !!!
(two Booting messages, Booting from External USB, followed by some message about Recovery Mode followed by the NAS shutting down)
I know others have said on this thread and others to try many USB sticks, but I can't help but think that I influenced my Karma by buying the new NAS first :-)
Anyway, given the age of my RN314, I will be putting the new RN626 to use anyway once it arrives and relegating the RN314 to backup NAS duty
