Rebuilding ReadyNAS NV+ for Apple TV

Apple has to provide native solutions for NAS's. I hate having to run a Mac to share my Itunes content from my NAS to the AppleTv2. Why not just provide an open protocol Apple? I know they want to force feed everyone iTunes but come on, it's 2011 and we can't share video without iTunes running!!!!
I regret buying the AppleTv2 and should have gone with a Google TV that handles DLNA out of the box....
