Recover HDD data from broken ReadyNAS
I have two NAS: s
(1) Netgear ReadyNAS Duo v2
and
(2) Netgear 102 (RN10200).
There are two hard drives in both NAS: s which mirror each other.
I make backups to an external hard drive about once a month.
My questions concern at a possible future event:
Event.
NAS fails and I can not access my disks.
1st
How can I access the data in the disk of the failed NAS?
2nd
Can I take out the disks and move to the second NAS and use it instead of broken?
3rd
Can I access my data in the hard disk from the broken NAS by connecting it directly to my PC?
4th
Where can I find instructions for recovering data from damaged NAS.
Sincerely
Lasse146
First of all, I suggest that you confirm that you have a duo v2 (and not a v1). The labels are confusing, and there are lots of v1 owners who mistakenly believe they have a v2. If your NAS is running 5.3.x firmware, then it is a v2. If it is running 4.1.x firmware then it is a v1.
Also, I personally think that monthly backups are not frequent enough for most uses. Consider moving to a weekly cadence (or even daily).
The direct solution to your concern is to replace the duo with a new OS 6 NAS (perhaps another RN102, or an RN2xx series). Then you'd be able be able to install the disks from the broken NAS in the second one, boot up, and access the data. While you are at it, consider UPS protection - since many data recovery stories posted here begin with an unexpected power cut. One UPS can protect both NAS.
Your current NAS use differently formatted disks, so you cannot migrate from one to another. The tools you'd need to access the NAS disk directly from Windows would depend on which NAS you are accessing (and in the case of the duo, it might depend on which of the two disks you are reading). There is some information in these forums on mounting the disks in a PC,
