Remove Time machine backup

If I just delete the file containing the sparcbundles, does the NAS then free up that space? I'm not seeing the complete picture...

As far as I know, yes; it will free up the space.

  I can't delete the files. Finder just pops up the spinning beach ball. The Delete files bar never does anything. Any other ideas?

    I think you are on the right track if you already seeing the sparsebundle file. Lets wait for someone in the community to provide some feedback.
