Remove Time machine backup

My Time Machine filled up ages ago and is no longer useful (I now use USB drives).  How do I remove the volume I set aside for TM to recover the lost space?  If I uncheck the "Enable Time Machine sup...

I can't delete the files.  Finder just pops up the spinning beach ball.  The Delete files bar never does anything.  Any other ideas?

      I finally bit the bullet and bought a 2TB USB drive and backed-up teh NAS and then did a factory reset.  All is better now.
