Replacement NV+ (V1) - keeping disks & settings

So you purchased the NV+ prior to August 21, 2007? Then it would be out of warranty.
The configuration is on the disks so would be retained when you migrate the disks across. I would do the step 3 you suggest if possible.
Also note you can only migrate to the NV+ (v1) - silver chassis, not to the NV+ v2 (charcoal chassis). Make sure the replacement unit you purchase is a v1.
Hopefully your new NV+ will come with drive trays with a rectangular button. The older tray design (circular button) was known to get stuck sometimes.
