reverting from flexraid to two independent disks.
I have a Readynas duo V1 which has served me well over the years with 2x2TB drives in flexraid. I had a drive failure, so am now down to one drive. I tried to put in a second drive, but the second d...

Hello GuyCarnegie,
If you can still access the files then that must be RAID1 and you cannot add that smaller size of disk. You need to replace the old disk that died with the same size of the existing one. Once you have a replacement 2TB, insert it to the vacant bay and the NAS should let it resync.

Hi Jen. I realise that I can't retain the raid 1 function if I add the smaller disk. Is it not possible to revert to JBOD once I have selected to use RAID though?

Hello GuyCarnegie,
Your unit does not support JBOD.
Your only option here is get a replacement disk that is with the same size of the existing and working one. As always, I strongly recommend to always have full backup.

Ok thanks Jen
I could have sworn I originally had 2 completely independent (s:/ & t:/) drives installed in the unit originally, before I switched over to using X-raid. I guess I must have been mistaken.

can I replace with a 3 or 4TB drive, and then when I swap the other one, get a larger storage area?
ie
current setup:
#1-----#2
none + 2TB = 2TB non redundant
next
4TB + 2TB =2TB x-raid
next
4TB + 4TB = 4TB x-raid
is that possible? I'm loathed to go an buy another 2TB disk when I'm already at 1850GB used.

Hello GuyCarnegie,
As far as I can remember it does not have that option, sorry it has been years the since the last time I saw this unit in person and configured it. But you can try, If you can backup all the data. Factory reset the NAS then reconfigure starting with RAIDar, then see if you get an option of JBOD if not under FlexRAID you can see it as one of the options along with XRAID and FlexRAID. Factory resetting is always the way to switch from one RAID level to another, this means formatting the disks so you really need to have full backup.

Hello GuyCarnegie,
No, you cannot use disk higher than 2TB, thats a product limitation on this Sparc-based NAS unit.

thanks Jen - I guess I'm reaching the edge of this devices capabilities then. Perhaps time for a more significant upgrade. I must admit, write speed was something that has been bothering me about this unit for a while anyway.
