Hello Zebedee1,
ReadyNAS units have main folders (default and created ones) that are called shares, when you go to the admin page's Shares this will show these folders and insides these shares you can create/add subfolders. I would like to know if you were referring to a share when you said "ReadyNas RN104 which has a folder in it with about another 2500 folders inside of that. When I click on it to open it via the browser it does not open" and from which window do you do this "When I click on it to open it via the browser"?
Moreover, accessing the shares via web browser uses HTTP. So, you need to make sure this is enabled on the NAS settings as well as on the settings of the share that you want to access that way. See screenshots I added below:
Hope this helps you. Let us know.

It is a photo folder named Photo's created by going into the shares and clicking on add folder. It is set as SMB. Inside there are about another 2500 folders named with dates e,g, 2016-01-28 etc Inside each of those folders is about 20 jpg files. I have it set to display them in details view. When I try to open it the little cursor next to the folder spins for a while. The blue line moves across the top as in its searching, then everything just stops and nothing is displayed. I'm thinking this NAS's 512MB of memory is just not enough. Folders with less files in them open no problem.
Thank you

I have larger shares (more folders and more files) on my RN102 that I can navigate easily. They aren't organized like yours though but I do have at least one folder with ~3600 files that opens quickly. I don't have a folder with thousands of subfolders (but I have several with hundreds of subfolders)..
You'd certainly have better performance if you organized yearly folders (moving your existing folders into the appropriate year).
Did you try enabling http access, and see if you can navigate the share from your browser?
Also, is the PC using wifi or ethernet?
