RN204 repeated file system error

Hi,

We have two RN204 devices in our network. They are on firmware version 6.9.3 and use Active Directory authentication.

Both has suffered file system errors and data loss multiple times. The errors happen out of the blue sky. One day it works perfectly, the next day some of the shares are unreadable. The only way to recover is by reformatting the file system.

After such an error ls from the console shows this:

root@hubu002:/data# ls -l
ls: cannot access 'fs5': Input/output error
ls: cannot access 'ap3': Input/output error
total 0

drwxrwx---+ 1 admhu_gener hubud_it 56 Sep 16 02:02 to_ext

The shares ap3 and fs5 are bad, to_ext is still readable.

In dmesg I can see many lines like this:

[2331551.098690] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096
[2331551.098702] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096
[2331551.098752] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096
[2331551.098760] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096
[2331551.098795] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096
[2331551.098802] BTRFS critical (device md127): unable to find logical 3340983861248 len 4096

To me it seems that btrfs is unreliable. We also have older ReadyNAS devices that don't use btrfs and are very stable. I would like to ditch btrfs and use ext3 if possible.

Is there a way to reformat the file system of the RN204 so that ext3 is used instead of btrfs?

    No.

FWIW, I've been using OS-6 with btrfs for about 6 years now, and haven't had any issues.   I'm not disputing your experience, I am just sharing my own.  You might want to PM JohnCM_S or Marc_V and ask them if they are willing to take a look at your logs.
